‘Being a GLOCAL Connector has been an enlightening journey. Through meaningful conversations and shared experiences with my non-local peers, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of different cultures and perspectives. The friendships we’ve built go beyond campus and they’ve made Hong Kong feel more like a home to all of us.’
‘As a GLOCAL Connector, I learned to lead interactions. This was a key soft skill developed by me through GLOCAL. Alongside, I enjoyed the freshmen’s company, especially their fresh takes on various aspects of HKU I was so used to.’
‘Being a GLOCAL Connector was an amazing experience. I loved getting to know not just the non-local students in my group, but also my fellow Connectors. The educational trip to Foshan and Dongguan was honestly one of the best things that’s ever happened to me — I learned so much, but most importantly, I made so many friends.’
‘This is my second year serving as a GLOCAL connector, and I constantly find myself learning from my connectees while showing them around. While our backgrounds may shape us, our shared human experiences are what connect us. I look forward to being a connector again in the upcoming semester.’
‘We all shared stories from our cultures and got to know each other. Little did we know that we had spent over 3 hours at the restaurant bonding! I am grateful for the time we shared and for being able to meet everyone through GLOCAL, it was an overall amazing opportunity.’
“As an international fresher in Hong Kong, I embarked on my first ferry ride in the city. Throughout the journey, I had the opportunity to interact with people from different countries, enhancing my cross-cultural relationships. It’s great to forge new friendships, broaden my horizons while enjoying the view of Victoria Harbour and savouring local cuisine.”
“In 2021, amidst COVID restrictions and a delayed visa, I arrived in Hong Kong mid-semester, missing orientation and club sign-ups. Despite challenges, I found support and now aim to offer the same to new students, sharing experiences and providing guidance.”
“As a psychology and criminology student, I emphasize the value of the GLOCAL connect programme in facilitating cultural understanding, fostering connections, and providing support to navigate university life. I encourage full participation for a memorable experience.”
“As a final year student with a unique background, I share my journey of overcoming initial hesitations to engage with diverse communities at HKU. I encourage new students to embrace activities and clubs for a more enriching university experience, with support from us connectors.”
